HANNAHS AMERICAN DREAM
By Andrew R Heaton

In 1842 Hannah and Thomas Rhodes with their three young sons left Exleyhead in West Yorkshire for a new life as pioneer settlers in America. This book tells the story of the twenty-plus Exleyhead party of friends, neighbours and relatives who sailed the Atlantic, the Erie canal and Great Lakes to start their new lives in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. The book explores the trials and tribulations of the party, their fellow passengers, their new neighbours and in particular the fortunes of Hannah’s close family. In time they were joined by many more friends and family from Yorkshire becoming part of the historical mass migration of Europeans to the New World.

This true family and social history account of their journey is taken from the letters, anecdotes and family histories of their relatives, friends and fellow passengers. The whole purpose of bringing this book to print has been to record for posterity Hannah’s story in the hope that those who read it can relate to their own family’s history. Those readers who have connections to the Yorkshire families such as Rhodes, Green. Shackleton, Hanson, Clapham, Sunderland, Bottomley, Leach, Tuley, Wright, Ripley, Whiteley, Wadsworth, Whitley, Berry, or Murgatroyd will discover the part they played in this story. Hopefully you will be able to add a little more and help us all to find the answers to the many questions that still remain.

“An inquisitive glance at a hand-written family tree carefully unfolded and dusted down after years of hibernation revealed an entry under my grandmother’s own grandmother’s aunt Hannah Green (pictured on left) which simply said “went to America 1842”. This intrigued me as it established I could have distant relatives in America of whom I knew nothing. It raised questions I couldn’t answer – Where did they go? What happened to them? The more I thought about it the more questions needed an answer. I had to find out more.”     Andrew Heaton

“Let me again congratulate you on the MONUMENTAL amount of research you have undertaken!  I continue to be AMAZED! Congratulations on a wonderful book”        Peter Leach

“You uncovered a much bigger story than I imagined. Thank you for what you have done. I am astounded to see the scope of the work you have done here!”            Ed Hobbs
